January 2017 saw a number of policy changes in the global renewable power market.

In the Americas, in the US, the Maryland House of Delegates overruled the veto of the Clean Energy Jobs Act of 2016 and Alaska US senators Lisa Murkowski and Dan Sullivan put forward four Alaska-focused bills. The US Department of the Interior to auction 122,405 acres offshore Kitty Hawk, North Carolina. New York State Governor Andrew M. Cuomo set out proposals to deal with climate change. California state senator Scott Wiener announced a bill for solar power installations on new buildings. The Canadian province of Alberta came up with its energy efficiency vision.

In Asia-Pacific, the Indian state of Karnataka put in place a new solar power target of 6 Gigawatt (GW) by 2021 and, in Australia, the Government of Victoria launched a tender to set up a new large-scale solar power plant in the state.

In Europe, Middle East, and Africa, the French government announced its plan to auction 3 GW of onshore wind power capacity for the next three years and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy launched the implementation plan for its Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050.
