Dental implant fixtures are artificial tooth roots that support a restoration placed for a missing tooth or teeth and aid in the prevention of jaw bone loss. They are typically offered in the form of a metal-based material such as titanium and are inserted into the jaw to replace missing teeth. They can be described based on their shape and method of attachment to the jaw. In the case that a patient suffers tooth loss from tooth decay, root canal failure, gum disease (periodontists), trauma to the mouth (a tooth injury), excessive wear and tear or congenital defects, he or she may be in the position to receive an implant.

Other options are available on the market in the case that a patient has a missing tooth. Experts now regard implants with attached crowns as the preferred method for treating tooth loss because implants maintain the same functionalities as natural teeth and help preserve the jaw structure by preventing atrophy from bone loss. Bridgework and dentures are an alternative solution that addresses the cosmetic issue of having a missing tooth, but they do not prevent bone loss. Permanent implants maintain proper chewing function and exert appropriate, natural forces on the jawbone to keep it functional and healthy.

In order to determine whether an implant is ideal, a consultation with a dentist, oral surgeon, periodontist or prosthodontist is required. The appointment is necessary as it allows for a full examination of teeth and gums to evaluate bone density and quantity. Ideally, a candidate requires adequate bone in the jaw in order to support the implant. Potential implant patients should have the procedure conducted as soon as possible after losing a tooth to prevent bone loss at the site of the missing tooth. If there is insufficient bone or gum tissue, the patient may have to undergo some type of bone grafting procedure prior to the implementation of the implant.

A variety of dental professionals now administer certain implants. Sizable markets of general practitioners now conduct dental implant procedures. As implantology training becomes the norm in schools, the percentage of general practitioners placing dental implants will grow accordingly. For more complex cases, it is often necessary that an oral surgeon or periodontist place the implants. Also increasingly trained to place implants are prosthodontists. There has been considerable growth in terms of a pool of trained professionals with the capability to place implants. This, along with consumers’ knowledge of their options, has enabled the dental implant market to steadily grow in spite of a general improvement of oral health. The continued occurrence of tooth loss across the U.S. population, especially among the aging population, generates consistent and growing demand for implant products.

The dental market for implant fixtures has recently experienced major shifts in terms of its structure as a response to changing trends. An influx of discounted and value brands recently entering the U.S. market now cater to more cost-sensitive customers. In the past, the cost of implants was not a critical determining factor in the buying decision for many dentists. This has since changed after the economic downturn, which has made buyers more cost-sensitive. In addition, the demographics of dental professionals placing implants have been transforming. In the past, many did not regard general dentists as being fit for placing an implant. Now, more and more general practitioners are being fully trained on the subject of dental implants and are fully capable of conducting such procedures. With this new market of professionals placing implants, comes a new set of preferences in terms of implant purchases. As a response to these shifts, a restructuring of the market is occurring, with premium brands facing fierce competition from value brands and international discount implant fixture brands.

Abstract
The dental implant fixture market is segmented into premium, value, discount and mini implant products. These categories are often characterized by quality and pricing and are more easily viewed as a spectrum from discount to premium. In order to better define this segmentation, the categorization of certain brands is generally useful.
