The global macrocell radio transceiver (TRx) market grew 41% in 2016. Total TRx shipments across all air interfaces were x million for 2016, another record year for the industry. This report only focuses on the macrocell radio transceiver market. Please visit our website for market analysis reports covering the remote radio unit (RRU) and digital baseband unit (BBU) markets as well as BTS antennas and in-building small cells. In this thirteenth edition of the report, we have completely reorganized our dataset categories to streamline the analysis and to better reflect the current trends for 4G LTE/LTE-Advanced/LTE-Advanced Pro and 5G NR massive MIMO antenna radio systems (ARS).We are no longer reporting radio TRx shipments by individual frequency bands. 2016 Review: Transitioning to the world of 4.5G China was still the market to be in for 2016 as it represented 60% of overall global TRx shipments. This meant that Chinese-based suppliers Datang, Huawei Technologies, and ZTE were able to capitalize on their domestic market with foreign suppliers limited to 5-10% market share.

Shipments for China were essentially flat in 2016 compared with 2015, down 1%. Demand in the North America was strong due to 700MHz deployments as well as refarming of 850MHz and 1900MHz spectrum. LTE deployments in Asia Pacific also drove demand across SE Asia. India shipments increased by 183% as Reliance Jio completed its network roll out to launch commercial services. Oil-based countries that in the past were able to fund network large projects were weak in CAPEX spending such as Russia and Nigeria. We believe that mobile operators are upgrading their RRUs to 4T4R configurations in anticipation of supporting 4.5G network launches in 2017 and beyond.

The top suppliers by overall TRx shipments as well as for LTE technologies for 2016 were:
Overall #1 BBU Supplier: Vendor X
Overall #1 LTE eNodeB Supplier: Vendor X
Overall #1 FDD-LTE eNodeB Supplier: Vendor X
Overall #1 TDD-LTE eNodeB Supplier: Vendor X
Tier 1 (>20% Market Share)
Tier 2 (10-20% Market Share)
Tier 3 (<10% Market Share)

We have gathered data through exhaustive channel checks and interviews to key players in the global wireless infrastructure market sector in order to understand the dynamics of the market and the dynamics of each OEM supplier of TRx equipment. We have also gathered public data as well using our proprietary contacts to construct what we believe is a realistic forecast for the global digital baseband market. We wish to caution our readers that we are erring on the side of conservatism in our forecast assumptions and are attempting to define a lower boundary range of many possible outcomes over the next five years through 2021. We will be highlighting any possible upside potential to our estimates throughout the report to remind readers what could be potential
swing factors that could positively and negatively impact our assumptions and forecast. Our market statistics and unit data have been sanitized through many cross checks and examinations in order to fully correlate the data to each OEM. We believe that our data represents a very realistic view on OEM TRx shipments for 2015-2016.

Some OEM vendors experience an increase/decline in year over year shipments even though the total RF RRU and TRx shipments may have been higher/lower on a year over year basis. This is due to the critical BBU/RRU and RRU/TRx ratios we use to calculate estimated TRx shipments by OEMs.

TRx Architecture Definitions:
Macro Cell Indoor/Outdoor radio transceiver (TRx): We define a macro cell TRx as a radio transceiver that is integrated into either a standalone RF module or remote radio unit or an integrated massive MIMO antenna/radio system (ARS). The total combined RF output power of these solutions is greater than 20W and typically 40W-360W.
Non-Massive MIMO TRx= 1T2R, 2T2R, 2T4R, 4T4R, 8T8R radio systems
Massive MIMO TRx = 16T16R, 32T32R, 64T64R, 128T128R, and 256T256R radio systems
ARS = Antenna Radio System and can also be designated as active antenna unit (AAU) or active antenna system (AAS).

Air Interface Definitions
Following is the definition of differences between 2G/3G4G technologies analyzed in this report:
2G = GSM/EDGE, CDMA2000 1x, iDEN

All technologies that are defined within the 3GPP Rel 15 specification are considered 5G technologies.
4G LTE Definitions
CA = Carrier Aggregation used in LTE-Advanced

Massive MIMO implies an integrated remote radio unit and antenna element array system that supports 16T16R and above configurations
Non-Massive MIMO implies lower order MIMO solutions including 2x2, 4x4 and 8x8
4G = LTE/LTE-Advanced technologies supporting 3GPP Rel. 9/10/11/12 specifications including 64QAM and RRU configurations up to 4x4 MIMO and 5CC CA.
4.5G = LTE-Advanced Pro technologies supporting 3GPP Rel 13/14 specifications including 256QAM and up to 30CC CA. Typical peak downlink throughput is 1Gbps
using Cat 16 handsets and 256QAM, 4x4 MIMO, and 3CC CA using 20MHz channels for each frequency band and 2 or 4 layer MIMO.
4.9G = 4.5G along with implementing massive MIMO radio/antenna technology.
