Australia (AU) is endowed with abundant natural resources, including gold, uranium, coal, iron ore, copper, gold, and natural gas. The mining industry plays an crucial role in the country's economy. The country had 144.8 Billion tonnes of proved coal reserves, accounting for 12.70 percent of the overall total at the end of 2016. Of the global reserves, sub-bituminous, lignite accounted for 76.5Bnt and bituminous, and anthracite accounted for 68.3Bnt. The deposits are primarily located in Queensland, New South Wales, Western Australia, South Australia, and Tasmania.

Coal production reached 500 Million tonnes in 2016, down by a nominal 0.50 percent over 2015 as a result of the cessation of mining primarily across the state of Queensland, which was impacted by environmental and geological disruptions. During the review period (2000-2015), the country's production increased by 64.0 percent because of the commencement of nearly 53 coal projects.

Over the forecast period (2017-2021), the country's coal production is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 1.10 percent, owing to the commencement of operations containing the Eagle Downs Mine and the Byerwen Coal Project, both located in Queensland and currently under construction. These projects, with annual run-of-mine production capacities of 4.5Mt and 10Mt, respectively, are anticipated to commence operations by 2017.
