Growing Competition in Consumer Markets, Plethora of Products With Myriad Claims Means Consumers Increasingly Want Proof of Efficacy. Efficacy Testing to Reach $866.3 Billion

The global market for Efficacy Testing is projected to reach US$866.3 million by the year 2027, trailing a post COVID-19 CAGR of 10.7% over the analysis period 2020 through 2027. Cosmetics, food and pharma companies are streamlining and revising the ingredients used in formulations continuously for optimized cost and efficacy. In the pharmaceuticals Industry, drug efficacy testing is important to validate safest and most efficient active compounds. Stringent FDA drug approval regulations are leading to increased preclinical drug efficacy testing. Pharma giants are increasingly outsourcing testing to drug efficacy testing service providers in a bed to cut costs. Using animal models is a popular way to test compounds for their effectiveness on specific diseases. The manufacturing of generic drugs as a key trend in the pharmaceutical industry also bodes well for growth in the market. With branded drugs taking around 7-10 years to reach commercialization, generic drugs are much more popular, as they take relatively less time to reach complete potential. Generic drugs are described as the bioequivalent versions of branded drugs in terms of safety, quality, stability, impact, strength, dosage form, and route of administration. Over the years, generic drugs have emerged as safe and effective alternatives to the brand name formulations. The generic variants often different from brand names in terms of certain characteristics such as color, flavoring and shape, although these factors do not have any impact on the safety and efficacy of the medicines compared to the original version. Generic drugs are made using the same active ingredients that are utilized in branded drugs. A key advantage for generic drug makers is that they do not need to invest time and money into drug R&D and marketing efforts, whereby the generic drugs are priced considerably low compared to branded counterparts. As generic drug making companies focus on the speed factor to ensure access to first-to-file status, efficacy testing becomes more important than before.

With growing number of products with beauty claims being launched in the market, the cosmetics industry is coming under intense scrutiny. Manufacturers are coming under increased pressure to support their product claims. Cosmetic efficacy testing is growing in value and popularity on par with the competitive need to innovate newer & better performing products. Educated and aware customers are also increasingly demanding evidentiary support for products’ claims. Also growing in popularity and importance are preservative efficacy test (PET) for cosmetics. Cosmetics manufacturers of today are facing the challenges associated with preservatives. While these companies must ensure that their products are free from harmful microorganisms and safe for use, they also need to contend with increasing consumer criticism against the use of such preservatives. For decades, parabens remained the first choice as preservatives for cosmetic products. Parabens are simple esters that offer an easy and effective way of imparting antimicrobial agents into moisturizers, haircare, and other makeup products. A study conducted in 1995 found that 99% of cosmetics contained parabens. In the early 2000s, there were shifts in the perceptions of safety of parabens due to studies showing that esters cause estrogenic effects. Since estrogenic chemicals are shown to play a key role in breast cancer, deeper research was taken up to find whether parabens are rapidly metabolized and excreted always, or they might linger in the body in some cases and be potentially harmful. By 2004, there were mounting concerns about the safety of esters when researchers showed the accumulation of intact parabens in human breast tumors. This is driving cosmetics manufacturers to look for alternative techniques of preservation. The past decade demonstrated the difficulty of finding preservatives with a broad and spectrum of antimicrobial effects with the robustness required to ensure safety while being sufficiently mild to avoid any negative interaction with other ingredients. Hurdle Technology, as the very name suggests, creates a series of hurdles, which might not be individually big enough to avert contamination, collectively, as back-to-back hurdles, they keep the microorganisms in control.

Health and wellness trend is ballooning into a major trend catalyzed by the COVID19 pandemic and the obsession with immunity building. The trend towards naturals has triggered robust growth in botanical research studies as increasing number of herbs and plant compounds are added to health products and dietary supplements. There is strong demand for bio-assays to test efficacy & biological activity of herbal ingredients in products. Of late, significant focus has been shed on regulating nutraceuticals and monitoring their efficacy claims. Convenience food has and will continue to remain a major trend in the food industry. With the packaged foods industry flooded with foods with various health claims, nutrition label analysis is growing in importance. Growing incidence of food fraud is throwing the spotlight on stricter regulations to ensure manufacturers take responsibility for food safety, traceability, recall and notification. A growing number of laboratories are beginning offer ingredient analysis services to analyze food products for their physical, chemical and microbiological properties.
