The Middle East & African biofertilizer market was valued at USD 64.5 million in 2019 registering a CAGR of 6.4% during the forecast period (2020-2025). The consumption volume of the Middle East & African biofertilizer market was 78.0 thousand metric ton in 2019 registering a CAGR of 5.8% during the forecast period (2020-2025). By microorganism, rhizobium witnessed the fastest growth rate among all the types. This bacteria is responsible for majorly fixing the nitrogen content of the soil. It has been estimated that 40-250 kg of nitrogen per hectare per year is fixed by different legume crops by the microbial activities of rhizobium. Carrier-based biofertilizers occupied a share of 55.67% in 2019, among other technologies. The higher prices of liquid biofertilizers, as compared to carrier-based biofertilizers, have led to the increased popularity of the latter among the regional farmers. Thus, the latter is driving the market revenue for the biofertilizers market. Microorganisms, such as, rhizobium, azotobacter, and azospirillum are mostly applied as seed treatments. The treatment via seed is more popular in the region because farmers focus more on short-term productivity per crop cycle than long-term productivity. Therefore, revenue is mostly driven by seed treatments. South Africa occupied a share of 57.78%, owing to the presence of around 80% of the biofertilizer companies in the country, whereas Egypt occupied 16.64% share owing to the increased trend of organic farming. Rhizobium occupies a major share among all organisms by volume. This is because the major companies provide products that contain this bacteria, which are among the fast-selling products, thereby helping the companies maintain voluminous sales.

Cereals and grains occupied the largest share owing to the higher application of biofertilizers on maize in Africa and wheat and barley in the Middle East, as these are the crops that are majorly grown across the regions. The production volume of maize was 84.2 million metric ton in 2017, which was the highest among all crops (FAO).South Africa and Kenya are growing at a moderate rate though the voluminous share is occupied majorly by South Africa, owing to the rate of adoption of biofertilizers driven by governmental initiatives and area under organic farming. Moreover, the growth rate of liquid biofertilizers is more than the carrier-based fertilizers by volume, owing to the faster adoption of the former due to the constraints of carrier-based fertilizers with respect to withstanding temperatures higher than 30°C and UV rays. Therefore, the voluminous growth rate is expected to increase the revenue of the former over the forecast period.

Scope of the Report
For the purpose of this report, biofertilizers have been defined as commercially manufactured products derived from microorganisms, when applied to seeds, plant surfaces, or soil, colonize the rhizosphere or the interior of the plant and promote growth by increasing the supply or availability of primary nutrients to the host plant. The market under study includes biofertilizers applied by farmers and the large commercial growers in the crop as well as non-crop agricultural practices. ?
The companies in the Middle East & African market operate in B2C format. The market sizing has been done at the consumer level. The market has been segmented by technology, by microorganism, by mode of application, and by crop type. The market has also been segmented based on countries across the Middle East and Africa.

Key Market Trends
Increased Food Demand and Need for Sustainable Agriculture Development

Africa has the highest population with the largest arable land. For instance, the Sub-Saharan African region has 13% of the world population and has approximately 20% of the global agriculture land. However, the region is facing severe food insecurity, which is primarily attributed to inadequate food production. The lack of access to mechanization in farming and limited use of fertilizers due to less farmer buying power are driving the demand for alternative cost-effective fertilizers, such as biofertilizers in the region. According to the Africa Fertilizer Organization, in 2018, the total consumption of fertilizers in regions, such as Ghana, Kenya, and Mali, was reported to be 310,866 metric ton, 545,675 metric ton, and 816,375 metric ton, respectively, while the imports were recorded at 315,157 metric ton, 626,418 metric ton, and 705,746 metric ton, respectively. They have a severe effect on environment and soil fertility. In order to lessen the fertilizer imports, there is a need for production of indigenous fertilizers such as biofertilizers that can substitute the conventional fertilizer usage in the region. For instance, different Azolla species, like A. pinnata, A. nilotica, A, and filiculoides found in African countries such as Nigeria, Kenya, and Senegal, can be used on rice plantations to increase the yield and nitrogen content in soil. Rhizobium biofertilizer alone can supplement about 40-50% of fertilizer needs of crops in most arid and semiarid marginal lands of Zimbabwe, Tanzania, and Kenya, which are deficient in nitrogen. Smallholder farms in Sub-Saharan Africa account for around 33 million, representing 80% of all farms in the region. Low fertility and inefficient management of soils have been major productivity challenges among African smallholder farmers. This can be somehow mitigated by the usage of inorganic fertilizers but their usage in soil nutrient management is unsustainable, causing soil degradation and environmental pollution. Currently, the increase in demand for sustainable agriculture is driving farmers to adopt cost-effective integrated nutrient management systems. This, in turn, may lead to demand for biofertilizers in the region. Thus, the rapid rise in population with inadequate food production in the region is demanding sustainable agriculture practices, which include integrated nutrient management practices such as the usage of biofertilizers.

Carrier-Enriched Biofertilizers Dominates the Market

The carrier-enriched biofertilizers segment of the market was valued at USD 35.9 million in 2019 registering a CAGR of 6.3% during the forecast period. The consumption volume of carrier-enriched biofertilizers segment was 45.7 thousand metric ton in 2019 registering a CAGR of 5.7% during the forecast period (2020-2025). In countries of Middle East & Africa region, especially in Saudi Arabia, biofertilizers manufactured are mostly carrier-based. In these carrier-based biofertilizers, the microorganisms have a shelf-life of only six months. The reason behind its current popularity in the region is that it is cheap and easy to produce and overall it requires less investment, as compared to liquid-based fertilizers. The study by Nigerian University in 2016 reported that biofertilizers though always in powder form are mostly lignite as it has a high organic content, and it holds more than 200% water, which enhances the growth of the micro-organisms. The dry complex biofertilizer had granules which contain more than a billion of bacteria per gram of granules. These granules are suitable for field application along with seeds and fertilizers in furrows. A review on biofertilizers by faculty of agriculture in Turkey gave new prospects on the exploitation of the natural production of bacterial biofilms as a possible carrier. The designing of biofilmed-based carriers, natural carriers, and polymer-based carriers or of encapsulation techniques which allow the production of macro-capsules could facilitate the development of biofertilizers formed of microbial consortium. Thus, research on new inventions for carrier-based biofertilizers will help in boosting the market revenue along with the widened scope in the years to come. However, the major constraints with respect to carrier-enriched biofertilizers are that it is non-tolerant to UV rays and temperatures are higher than 30°C. The population density of these microbes is only 108 cfu/ml at the time of production. This count decreases day by day, which is why carrier-based biofertilizers are not very effective and their market value is expected to observe a moderate trend over the forecast period.

Competitive Landscape
The market is highly fragmented, with very small players in the market. Rizobacter Argentina and Symborg are the prominent global players present in this region with an estimated market share of 5% and 1%, respectively. Other companies, like International Panecca, AgriLife, and Mapelton Agri Biotech, are the small local players in this region. As the sales revenues of these companies are negligible, major strategies, such as mergers, expansions, and partnerships, are not being adopted by them. The most prominent strategic activity observed in the market was the product launch by Symborg. Symborg launched an innovative product, BlueN, that maximizes the efficiency of atmospheric nitrogen. However, the African biofertilizer market is mainly reliant on imports. All the aforementioned companies indulge in manufacturing processes in their headquartered countries only and export the labeled biofertilizer products to Africa. Some firms are partnering with local fertilizer manufacturing companies for the distribution of their products.
