Launched in 2009 in the US, Boku is one of the world’s leading carrier billing-based mobile payment services.Primarily used for purchases of digital content, Boku is offered by leading digital companies including Apple, Google, Sony, Microsoft, Facebook, and Spotify.

Boku enables customers to charge their payments directly to their mobile phone bill and provides merchants with the ability to accept payments from anyone with a mobile phone.Boku is now accepted in over 50 countries and has partnerships with over 160 mobile network operators (MNOs).

It has offices in the US, the UK, Germany, India, China, France, Latvia, Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, and Japan.

The platform has received around $90m in funding since its inception, with Benchmark Capital, DAG Ventures, Index Ventures, Khosla Ventures, and New Enterprise Associates (NEA) being the major investors. In November 2017, Boku raised £45m ($57.42m) through an initial public offering (IPO) and commenced trading on the AIM sub-market of the London Stock Exchange. Investments in the company have supported its international expansion, as inorganic growth is the firm’s core strategy. To expand its business, it has acquired payment service providers such as Danal in 2018, Mobileview Italia in 2015, mopay in 2014, and Qubecell in 2013.

- In June 2009, the Boku mobile payment service was launched. The company was incorporated by Vidicom, which eventually renamed itself Boku.
- In September 2018, Boku launched a phone verification service, allowing merchants to verify customers’ phone numbers using Boku.
- In October 2019, Boku partnered with digital mobile wallet GoPay to expand mobile payment capabilities in Indonesia. The partnership enables Boku’s merchant customers in Indonesia to accept cashless payments using GoPay.
