- In October 2021, public transport operator Transdev Netherlands collaborated with electronic ticketing technology solutions provider Enghouse Telexis to launch contactless EMV payments on Transdev’s public transport network. This enables commuters to make contactless payments using debit cards, credit cards, and mobile wallet solutions. Initially the payment system was enabled in the Gooi & Vechtstreek region and is gradually being expanded to other regions across the country. The adoption of contactless payment cards for transport payments will further support payment card market growth.
- Buy now pay later is an emerging trend globally. The service is gradually gaining traction in the Netherlands, particularly among Generation Z consumers, many of whom do not have a credit card. The country’s buy now pay later market is crowded; AfterPay, Klarna, Billink, SprayPay, Sezzle, and Scalapay all have a presence in the market. AfterPay is the preferred buy now pay later tool for online purchases. It is supported by over 5,000 online merchants including Ziengs, Scapino, Blokker, and Omoda. Klarna also supports in-store payments. Meanwhile, in January 2022, Santander launched its buy now pay later offering Zinia in the Netherlands. The solution enables users to purchase products online and in-store via interest-free installments.
