Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma Understanding

Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma: Overview
Cutaneous T cell lymphomas (CTCLs) are a heterogeneous group of extranodal non-Hodgkin’s lymphomas that are characterized by a cutaneous infiltration of malignant monoclonal T lymphocytes. In cutaneous T-cell lymphoma, the T cells develop abnormalities that make them attack the skin. Cutaneous T-cell lymphoma can cause rash-like skin redness, slightly raised or scaly round patches on the skin, and, sometimes, skin tumors. The diagnosis of CTCLs is difficult at early stages because of the presence of multiple clinical presentations and lack of definitive diagnostic criteria. The diagnosis is based upon a thorough clinical evaluation, detection of certain symptoms and physical findings, a detailed patient history, and a variety of specialized tests. The risk of developing this rare cancer increases with age. Most people are diagnosed when they are in their 50s or older. Biopsies typically involve surgical removal and microscopic examination (i.e., histologic) of small samples of tissue cells gathered from CTCL skin lesions. The most common type and classic presentation of CTCL is known as mycosis fungoides and usually progresses slowly over many years. Treatment options may include: Skin creams and ointments, Light therapy (phototherapy), Radiation therapy, Medications, Exposing blood cells to light, and Bone marrow transplant.
