The Europe PCR for respiratory infection diagnostics market is expected to reach US$ 2,432.46 million by 2028 from US$ 1,241.01 million in 2021. The market is anticipated to grow at a CAGR of 10.1% from 2021 to 2028.
Chronic respiratory diseases (CRDs) are among the leading causes of morbidity globally, and Europe is no exception. The burden is widely seen in the region due to the heavy consumption of tobacco.

According to the European Lung White Book, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reported the European region ranks fourth for fatal lung diseases accounting for nearly one-tenth of all deaths in 2008. Also, in the European Union, ~28 countries, i.e., 12.5% was the proportion of deaths due to respiratory diseases. In addition, in 2008, the European Respiratory Society (ERS) reported ~6 million hospital admissions due to respiratory diseases, accounting for nearly 7% of total hospital admissions.
Similarly, the data published in July 2020 by “Global Burden of Chronic Respiratory Diseases” states that hospital in-patient admission rates for respiratory system diseases ranged from 6.20%–30.88% in Iceland and Bulgaria in 2017. The increasing hospital admissions in Bulgaria can be majorly attributed to poor air quality and increased concentrations of fine airborne particles. Moreover, as per the WHO, every year, more than one million cases are reported, and ~ 23,000 deaths occur due to CRDs in the Netherlands. In the Netherlands, lung disease is accounted as the fourth most common cause of deaths. Also, nearly 28% of the Dutch adult population is addicted to smoking, which is contributing to the increasing burden of CRDs. Due to all these factors, the incidence of CRDs in the Netherlands is increasing.
Furthermore, countries such as the UK and Germany are the most significant contributors to the increasing burden of CRDs in Europe. For instance, according to the National Health Services, in England, nearly one in five people is affected by a respiratory disease, and respiratory diseases is the third leading cause of deaths.
Furthermore, in England, respiratory diseases such as lung cancer, pneumonia, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are the major causes of deaths. Besides, the data states that hospital admissions in England have been increased three times of rate of all general admissions in the past seven years.
The burden of CRDs is expected to increase in the coming future due to poor air quality, increase in addiction to smoking, and rise in geriatric population that is more prone to COPD and lung cancer. Moreover, programs initiated in the countries to improve treatment and support the people living with respiratory diseases are likely to increase the demand for PCR for the diagnosis of respiratory diseases.

This will lead to the market growth during the forecast period.
