US outdoor furniture & grill demand to accelerate

The outdoor furniture and grill market in the US (which includes patio heaters, complementary outdoor cooking appliances, and accessories such as covers, cushions, umbrellas, and grilling utensils) is forecast to reach $9 billion in 2019. After peaking in 2007, US demand for outdoor furniture and cooking appliances plummeted in 2009. Nevertheless, recessionary trends toward “staycations” and at-home al fresco entertainment supported sales to a degree between 2009 and 2014 and enabled a respectable rebound in demand through 2014 as the economy improved. Through 2019, sales of these products will be buoyed by continued emphasis on a blending of outdoor and indoor spaces. Likewise, greater preference for higher-value products in these spaces will boost value demand in the short term but, due to product durability, will restrain aftermarket sales somewhat.

Strong rebound in housing completions to fuel demand

Double-digit advances in new housing completions will buoy demand in the dominant residential market, which acounts for more than 90 percent of sales. The smaller nonresidential market, driven by demand in lodging facilities and restaurants, will post more rapid gains through 2019, fueled by the remaining pent-up demand for these products as construction spending and investment trends improve. Demand in other non residential markets (including beaches; campgrounds; national, state, and local parks; boats; and other recreational facilities) will rebound from 2014 levels, when demand was hampered by market weakness due to budgetary cuts in applications such as national park expenditures.

Outdoor furniture to offer strong opportunities

Sales in outdoor furniture and accessories will accelerate through 2019, driven by ongoing trends toward blending indoor and outdoor living spaces and increasing preference for higher-end pieces that offer greater durability and comfort. Affluent households will drive high value spending, but outdoor furniture is offered at a wide range of price points, making it a broad market in general. Heightened attention to stylistic considerations and improved fabric durability will buoy demand for related accessories, as these products can inexpensively update furniture.

Sales of grills and accessories will also accelerate through 2019. Gains will be driven by increased interest in diverse preparation techniques and the corresponding pur-chase of secondary grills or other similar outdoor cooking appliances (e.g., outdoor pizza ovens, smokers, and fryers). In-creasing sales of smaller, portable models will also benefit gains by expanding the potential market to people who either do not have space for a conventional grill or are interested in a grill for use tailgating or camping.
Through 2019, demand for patio heating products will accelerate, advancing at a double-digit pace from a small base. These products are increasingly popular due to their ability to extend the outdoor season.
