South African cottonseed oil consumption is forecast to plummet by almost a quarter in the next five years. In 2021, consumption of the oil dropped to 1 thousand metric tons, down 20.6% from 2017. This was enough to place South Africa 45th in the global rankings. Canada led the way with 1 thousand metric tons, followed by China, Brazil and Uzbekistan. By 2026, South African consumption is projected to fall to 0.21 thousand metric tons, a decrease of 23.9% from 2021.
