Since 1998, demand for cotton in Burundi has increased by more than 50%. At the same time, Burundian cotton production is estimated to fall to $1.15 million in 2026, a decrease of 1.8% from 2021. Since 1966, the country's cotton supply has dropped by 2.4%. Burundi ranked 55th in the world in 2021, lagging behind Thailand, which produced $1.28 million. China, the US and Pakistan were the next three biggest producers.
