Madagascar's alcoholic drink consumption is projected to decline significantly over the next five years. By 2028, consumption is expected to drop to approximately 4,200 metric tons, down from the current 5,000 metric tons in 2023. This represents an average annual decrease of 2.7%. The trend reflects a longer-term pattern, as Malagasy demand for alcoholic beverages has been decreasing by 3.6% annually since 2019. In the global context, Madagascar ranked 95th in 2023, with Bolivia surpassing it with a similar consumption level of 5,000 metric tons. Leading the ranking were India, Japan, and Russia, occupying the second, third, and fourth spots respectively. In terms of exports, Madagascar’s alcoholic drink industry is also facing a decline. By 2028, the value of exports is anticipated to fall to about $1.2 million, down from roughly $2 million in 2023. This marks an average annual decrease of 8.4%. The decline has been ongoing for decades, with Malagasy supply dropping by 0.5% annually since 1995.
