Malawi is set to increase its agricultural land area by 1.2% in the next five years, reaching 3.79 million hectares by 2026. This growth follows an upward trend since 1966 when Malawi first started recording agricultural land area figures. On average, the country has seen an increase of 0.5% year-on-year. In 2021, Malawi ranked 58th in the world for agricultural land area, behind Zambia (3.68 million hectares) in 57th place. India, Russia and China came in second, third and fourth, respectively.
