American coal production is projected to drop significantly over the next five years, with estimates suggesting a decline to 7.2 exajoules by 2028 from the current 10.5 exajoules in 2023. This represents an average annual decrease of nearly 6%. The downward trend in coal supply is not new. Since 1986, the U.S. has experienced an average yearly reduction of 7.4% in its coal production.
