Over the past decade, the recycling and preparation for reuse of large household appliances in Sweden has experienced fluctuating growth. The period from 2013 to 2023 saw a decrease from 70.98 thousand metric tons to 61.58 thousand metric tons, with notable annual variations. Specifically, after a peak in 2013, there was a downward trend until 2015, followed by a recovery in 2016. From 2017 to 2023, the trend stabilized with minor fluctuations, maintaining a slow but steady increase in the latter years.
In 2023, the volume of large household appliances recycled stood at 61.58 thousand metric tons. Recent years demonstrated marginal year-on-year growth rates of around 0.6% since 2020. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for the past five years leading up to 2023 was approximately 0.52%.
Forecasts from 2024 onward project a gradual increase in recycling volume. The volume is expected to reach 63.48 thousand metric tons by 2028, with an anticipated average yearly growth rate (CAGR) of about 0.48%, indicating a steady, albeit slow increase in recycling efforts.
Future trends to watch for include advancements in recycling technology, changes in consumer behaviors towards more sustainable practices, and potential regulatory changes which could further boost recycling rates. Innovations in product design aiming at easier disassembly and recycling could also play a significant role in driving future growth.
