In 2023, Germany led Europe in paper packaging waste generation at 21.95 million metric tons with a modest increase of 1.07% YoY. France, the UK, and Italy each generated between 13.1 and 13.48 million metric tons, showing increases of 1.3%, 1.33%, and 1.01%, respectively. Spain, in contrast, decreased by 0.62% to 9.08 million metric tons, while Poland's waste surged by 4.37% to 5.48 million metric tons. Significant growth occurred in smaller countries like Romania (10.36%), Finland (5.23%), and Denmark (6.04%). On the other hand, certain markets such as Bulgaria and Cyprus experienced contractions of -2.15% and -4.37% respectively. Over the past five years, the compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) varied with countries like Poland and Romania observing high growth, contrasting with more stable markets like Germany and France.
