Germany leads European shipping volumes in 2023 with 16.08 billion tonne kilometers, followed by the Netherlands and Belgium, which are also significant contributors. Romania, though starting from a lower base, exhibited a notable increase of 13.39%, signaling rapid growth. Conversely, Luxembourg, Poland, and the Czech Republic experienced considerable declines. The Netherlands and France also saw a contraction, with decreases of over 2% each. While Austria and Germany showed relatively stable figures, Bulgaria faced a significant decline of 3.64%. Slovakia and Croatia, smaller players, displayed promising growth of 8.45% and 5.15%, respectively.

Future trends to watch include the potential shift towards greener technologies in river transport, influenced by increasing environmental regulations. Countries showing rapid growth, such as Romania and Slovakia, may continue to expand their barge transport capabilities.
