European Wind Energy Consumption by Country

Germany led European wind energy consumption in 2023 with 1.22 Exajoules, experiencing a modest 3.14% YoY increase. The United Kingdom followed, consuming 0.79 Exajoules with a 7.83% increase YoY. Spain and France saw growths of 4.52% and 6.58%, respectively. Sweden's 15.66% spike and the Netherlands' 17.71% rise were notable, with values reaching 0.33 and 0.23 Exajoules. Meanwhile, Norway witnessed a significant 34.69% growth. Countries such as Russia and Croatia saw dramatic increases of 93.32% and 13.97%, respectively.

Trends from smaller nations like Luxembourg, Latvia, and Belarus also displayed double-digit growths. However, countries like Hungary, Czech Republic, Estonia, Cyprus, Switzerland, and Macedonia showed stagnation with no growth or minimal increases. Over the past five years, Germany and the UK had a steady average growth rate, while nations like Norway, Russia, and Croatia recently witnessed rapid annual increases.

Future trends to watch for include the advancement of renewable energy technologies and policies encouraging higher wind energy adoption. Norway and Russia, in particular, are likely to sustain their rapid growth rates. Consistency in policy support and technological innovation will be pivotal for countries lagging, such as Hungary and Switzerland, to boost their wind energy consumption. Additionally, observing how economic and political factors influence investment and development in the sector will be crucial.
