Hungarian Dairy Industry Faces Decline in Production and Sales BUDAPEST – The Hungarian dairy products sector is projected to experience a decline in both production and sales over the next five years. By 2028, the production of dairy products in Hungary is expected to reach €803 million, down from €820 million in 2023. This represents a year-on-year average decline rate of 0.3%. Since 2013, Hungary's dairy supply has decreased by an average of 0.5% annually. In 2023, Hungary ranked 20th globally in dairy production, with Lithuania slightly ahead at €820 million. The leading countries in this sector remain Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands, occupying the second, third, and fourth positions respectively. Similarly, Hungarian dairy product sales are forecasted to drop to €874 million by 2028, from €900 million in 2023, reflecting a 0.5% annual decline. The market has been shrinking at an average rate of 0.4% per year since 2013. Again, in 2023, Hungary was positioned 20th, trailing Lithuania at €900 million, with Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands maintaining the top spots in market rankings. A significant reduction is also expected in dairy product consumption. By 2028, consumption is set to plummet to approximately 71 million kilograms, down drastically from 443 million kilograms in 2023. This equates to an average annual decline of 28%. Historically, demand has been decreasing by 10.3% year on year. Italy, the United Kingdom, and France have been leading the consumption rankings, holding the second, third, and fourth places, respectively. The ongoing downward trends in Hungary's dairy industry call for strategic interventions to stabilize and potentially revive the sector.
