Global consumption of sugarcane is expected to fall by 0.2% year-on-year over the next five years, reaching 35.7 million metric tons by 2026. This is down from 36.1 million metric tons in 2021. Between 2017 and 2021, global demand grew by 0.6% annually. India was the largest consumer of sugarcane in 2021, with 16.8 million metric tons. Brazil, Thailand and Egypt followed in second, third and fourth place respectively. Pakistan saw the strongest growth, with an increase of 24.3% year-on-year since 2017, while Iran saw the biggest decline, with a decrease of 30.9%. Global production of sugarcane is forecast to reach 21.1 billion metric tons by 2026, up 0.9% year-on-year since 2021. This is an increase from 19.9 billion metric tons in 2021. Since 1966, global supply has grown 1.2% annually. Brazil was the largest producer of sugarcane in 2021, with 7.8 billion metric tons. India, Thailand and China followed in second, third and fourth place respectively. Malaysia experienced the strongest growth, with a 17.7% year-on-year increase since 1966, while Guyana saw the biggest decline, with a decrease of 19.2%.
