Laos' consumption of sugar cane is projected to drop to around 200,000 metric tons by 2026, a decrease of 2.2% annually since 2021. Since 2017, the country has seen a decrease of almost 3% each year. In 2021, Laos ranked 12th in the world, behind Cameroon at 226,000 metric tons. Brazil, Thailand and Egypt were ranked second, third and fourth respectively. Laos' sugar cane production is expected to rise to over 2.5 million metric tons by 2026, with an average growth rate of 2.8% year on year since 2021. Since 1966, production in the country has grown by 1.1% annually. In 2021, Laos was the 45th ranked country, overtaken by the Democratic Republic of Congo at 2.1 million metric tons. India, Thailand and China were ranked second, third and fourth, respectively.
