Malawi's coffee consumption is projected to reach approximately 13,000 metric tons by 2028, up from 11,000 metric tons in 2023. This marks an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. Since 2019, demand has grown by about 1.9% each year. In 2023, Malawi was ranked 70th globally in coffee consumption, with Yemen slightly ahead at 11,000 metric tons. Leading the global consumption rankings were the United States, Germany, and Japan, occupying the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively. On the production front, Malawi's coffee output in 2023 is expected to hit 5,680 bags of 60 kg each, a significant drop from 7,140 bags in 2022. This represents a sharp decline of 20.4% from the previous year. Since 1995, the country's coffee production has decreased by an average of 15.1% annually. In the 2023 rankings, Malawi stood at 49th place, with Ghana surpassing it with the same production volume of 5,680 bags. The top spots in coffee production were held by Vietnam, Colombia, and Indonesia, ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively.
