North Korean demand for maize is set to increase modestly in the upcoming five years. In 2021, maize consumption in the country reached 1,140 thousand metric tons, up 0.3% year-on-year. Since 2017, North Korean maize demand has grown at a rate of 0.2% annually, placing the country at number 30 in the world. Nepal had the highest demand at 1,140 thousand metric tons, followed by India, China and Indonesia. North Korean production of maize is also expected to increase at a yearly rate of 1.3% to reach 2.67 million metric tons by 2026. Since 1966, maize production has grown at a rate of 2.4% annually, with the country coming in at number 38 in 2021. Nepal had the highest production at 2.47 million metric tons, followed by China, Brazil and Argentina.
