Costa Rican maize consumption is expected to reach 80,000 metric tons by 2026. Since 2017, demand has increased by 0.9% year-on-year, and it was ranked 91st in 2021, behind Tajikistan. India, China, and Indonesia came in second, third, and fourth, respectively. Production of Costa Rican maize in 2021 was close to 3,880 metric tons, down 15.1% from the 4,570 metric tons in 2020. Since 1966, supply has decreased by 16.5% year-on-year, and it was ranked 137th in 2021, behind Armenia. China, Brazil, and Argentina took the second, third, and fourth spots.
