Lao consumption of alcoholic drinks is projected to drop to approximately 39,000 metric tons by 2028, down from around 40,000 metric tons in 2023. This marks an average annual decline of 0.4%. Despite this downward trend, demand in Laos had been rising at an annual rate of 0.5% since 2019. In the global ranking for 2023, Laos stood at 39th place, with Chile slightly ahead at 40,000 metric tons. Leading the list were India, Japan, and Russia, occupying the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively. Conversely, Lao exports of alcoholic beverages are on an upward trajectory. By 2028, exports are expected to reach about $349 million, up from roughly $284 million in 2023. This marks an average annual growth rate of 3.2%. Since 2015, the nation's export supply has been increasing at an annual rate of 5.9%.
