HELSINKI – Finnish sea transportation expenditure is projected to plummet to approximately €82 million by 2028. This marks a steep decline from the €134 million recorded in 2023, reflecting a year-on-year compound annual growth rate (CAGR) decrease of 7.9%. The downward trend in Finland's sea transportation demand has been ongoing since 2013, with a consistent year-on-year decline of 7%. The Finnish passenger ship fleet experienced a dramatic reduction in 2021, shrinking to just three units from 75 units in 2020. This 96% decrease from the previous year highlights a substantial contraction in the fleet size. Since 2002, the supply of Finnish passenger ships has fallen by an average of 70.4% annually. In 2021, Finland was ranked 14th globally in terms of passenger ship fleet size, with Slovenia surpassing it with three units. Spain, Greece, and Italy held the second, third, and fourth positions respectively in this ranking.
