South African consumption of millet is expected to drop by 0.5% year on year on average to 3,900 metric tons by 2026. This is slightly lower than the 4,000 metric tons consumed in 2021, a figure which remained unchanged since 2017. South Africa ranked 46th in 2021, behind Rwanda's 4,000 metric tons. Niger, Nigeria and Mali were the top three countries in terms of consumption. Meanwhile, South African production of millet is projected to decline by 4.5% year on year to 3,610 metric tons by 2026. This is a significant decrease from the 4,710 metric tons produced in 2021 and a 4.6% decline compared to that of 1966. In 2021, South Africa ranked 53rd; Azerbaijan was the leading producer with 4,710 metric tons. Nigeria, China and Mali were the second, third and fourth largest producers respectively.
