Since 2005, the fleet has been shrinking by 1.2% per year. In 2023, Italy was ranked second in terms of vessel fleet size, with Greece taking the lead at 402,000 units. Following Italy in the rankings were Denmark and Croatia, placing third and fourth, respectively.
