Historically, the United Arab Emirates has seen its energy demand increase by an average of 3.4% annually since 1970. As of this year, the UAE ranks 19th globally in energy consumption, with Spain slightly ahead at 5.2 exajoules. Leading the global ranking are the United States, India, and Russia, occupying the second, third, and fourth positions respectively.
