Spain is set to lose its place as the largest producer of food waste in Europe. By 2026, it is projected to produce 22,010 thousand metric tons, a 0.2% reduction on the previous year. Since 2000, Spanish production has grown 0.6% year on year. In 2021, Italy overtook Spain as the largest producer of food waste in Europe with 22,210 thousand metric tons. China, Germany and Japan were second, third and fourth in the ranking. Meanwhile, Spain is projected to treat 22,690 thousand metric tons of food waste by 2026, a 0.2% increase on the previous year. Since 1995, Spanish treatment has increased by 0.8% year on year. In 2021, Italy again came out on top in terms of food waste treatment with 22,450 thousand metric tons, with Germany, Japan and Mexico coming in second, third and fourth respectively.
