Fish production in Japan is forecast to hit 901,020 metric tons in 2026, representing a decrease of 1.1% compared to the 2021 figure of 950,210 metric tons. This rate has been declining since 1965 at a rate of 2.3% annually. In 2021, Japan ranked 12th in fish production, with Myanmar overtaking Japan with a production of 950,210 metric tons. Indonesia, India and Vietnam were ranked 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively. Fish consumption in Japan is expected to drop to 1,640 thousand metric tons by 2026, a decrease of 0.5% on average year on year from 2021's figure of 1,660 thousand metric tons. Since 2017, Japanese demand for fish has decreased by 2% year on year.
