Vietnam's rail network is projected to contract slightly over the next five years. By 2028, the total rail length in the country is expected to reach approximately 3,110 route-kilometers, down from 3,140 route-kilometers recorded in 2023. This represents a modest annual decrease of 0.2%. Despite the anticipated decline, the Vietnamese rail system has seen significant growth since the turn of the millennium. Since 2000, the length of the network has expanded at an average annual rate of 5.7%. In the broader context, Vietnam's rail length ranks behind global leaders in the sector. China, Russia, and India hold the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively, in terms of rail network length.
