Global Number of Patents in the Biotechnology Sector by Country

The global biotechnology sector shows a wide disparity in the number of patents across countries. In 2023, the United States led significantly with 8.76 thousand patents, followed by China with 3.93 thousand. Japan witnessed a decline of 4.5%, settling at 1.38 thousand patents, while Germany and France recorded modest increases of 4.82% and 3.16%, respectively. When analyzing a more extended period, the last five years show that the United States and China continue to dominate the biotech patent landscape, with China displaying a rapid growth trajectory. Several European countries also show stable advancements, but at different paces. Emerging markets such as Poland and Greece exhibit considerable year-on-year growth, signaling rising interest and investment in biotechnology.
