European Organic Barley Production by Country

In 2023, France leads European organic barley production at 121.51 thousand metric tons, increasing by 10.8% from the previous year. Spain closely follows with 118.09 thousand metric tons and a 2.73% growth. Sweden and the United Kingdom produced 66.77 and 33.78 thousand metric tons respectively, with year-on-year variations of 8.31% and -0.78%. Romania's production surged by 24.19% to 20.18 thousand metric tons. Finland and Greece produced 18.18 and 16.12 thousand metric tons, with increases of 9.02% and 6.71%, respectively. Other notable producers include the Czech Republic with a 5.5% increase to 8.87 thousand metric tons and Slovakia with a significant 14.63% rise to 8.3 thousand metric tons.

Production in smaller nations shows mixed results. Croatia saw an 11.42% increase while Hungary grew by 11.56%, contrasting with Latvia’s -1.87% and Estonia’s -1.7% declines. Slovenia and Bulgaria experienced growth rates of 6.1% and 15.88%, respectively. Serbia's production decreased by 3.99% to 1.54 thousand metric tons, while Luxembourg and Cyprus saw slight increments. Malta’s production remained flat.

Future trends to watch include the likely continued leadership of France and Spain, while Scandinavian countries could see steady growth. Meanwhile, Eastern European countries like Romania and Bulgaria may experience significant expansion, driven by increasing investments in organic farming practices.
