Egyptian onion production is expected to reach 3.3 million metric tons by 2026, up 1.1% year on year. This is an increase of 0.8% since 2017. In 2021, the United States overtook Egypt as the top producer with 3.1 million metric tons, while India, the United States, and Egypt respectively held the second, third and fourth spots. Meanwhile, Egyptian onion consumption is forecast to reach 2.9 million metric tons by 2026, up 1.5% year on year. This is a 0.5% increase since 2017. In 2021, the United States once again overtook Egypt as the leading consumer with 2.6 million metric tons, followed by India, the United States and Egypt in the second, third and fourth positions respectively.
