This marks an increase from around 56,000 metric tons in 2023, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.3%. Since 1976, the nation's fish supply has grown at an impressive annual rate of 12.7%. In contrast, fish consumption in Sri Lanka is expected to see a slight decline. By 2028, consumption is forecasted to drop to roughly 409,000 metric tons, down from about 416,000 metric tons in 2023. This represents an average annual decrease of 0.2% since 2019. In the global context, Sri Lanka ranked 16th in fish consumption in 2023, with Mexico overtaking it by consuming around 416,000 metric tons. Leading the rankings were Japan, the Philippines, and Thailand, holding the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.
