South African container traffic volume is projected to hit approximately 5 million Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs) by 2028, up from around 4.8 million TEUs in 2023. This marks an average annual growth rate of 0.9%. Since 2005, however, South African demand has seen a slight decline, decreasing by an average of 0.6% per year. In 2023, South Africa ranked 33rd globally, with Chile surpassing it with a container traffic volume of about 4.8 million TEUs. Leading the rankings were Slovenia, the United States, and Singapore, occupying the second, third, and fourth spots respectively.
