In 2021, Germany was the largest consumer at 15.8 Terajoules, followed by Italy, France and Spain. Generation of geothermal energy in Germany is also expected to increase over the next five years. Output is projected to reach 5.5 Gigawatthours by 2026, representing a yearly average growth rate of 3.4%. Since 2008, supply has grown 7.5% annually. In 2021, Germany was the largest producer at 4.5 Gigawatthours, followed by Italy, France and Spain.
