This marks an increase from around 7,500 terajoules in 2023, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5%. Dutch demand for geothermal energy has surged by an average of 15% annually since 2013. In the European context, the Netherlands ranked sixth in geothermal energy consumption in 2023. Portugal narrowly surpassed the Netherlands with an equal consumption of around 7,500 terajoules. Iceland, France, and Germany held the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively. On the production front, Dutch geothermal generation is set to climb to roughly 2,900 gigawatt-hours by 2028, up from about 2,100 gigawatt-hours in 2023. This also represents a steady 5% annual increase on average. Similar to consumption trends, geothermal energy supply in the Netherlands has expanded by 15% annually since 2013. In 2023, the Netherlands again held the sixth spot in geothermal generation, with Portugal leading slightly at around 2,100 gigawatt-hours. Iceland, France, and Germany also dominated the top positions in this ranking.
