Zambia's imports of lithium plummeted in 2018, dropping by nearly 99% compared to the year prior. In 2017, the country imported 370 kilograms of the precious mineral, but that number plummeted to just 4 kilograms in 2018. Despite the sharp decrease, demand for the mineral had increased 5.9% year over year since 2001. El Salvador overtook Zambia in 2018, importing 4 kilograms of the mineral. China, Japan, and the United States followed, coming in at second, third, and fourth place in the ranking.
