In 2023, Germany, the United Kingdom, and Italy were leading European countries in household out-of-pocket payments for healthcare providers, with Germany reaching 59 billion euros. Over the past two years, countries like Romania, Slovenia, and Czech Republic experienced the highest annual growth rates at 11.5%, 11.04%, and 6.6% respectively. Interestingly, Finland and Cyprus showed declines in out-of-pocket expenses with a 1.5% and 1.38% decrease respectively.

Looking forward, European healthcare expenditure trends suggest a trend toward rising household out-of-pocket payments, driven by aging populations, healthcare advances, and potential economic fluctuations.
