Japanese spice production is projected to drop to approximately 44,000 metric tons by 2028, down from 46,000 metric tons in 2023, marking an average annual decline of 0.5%. This downward trend is consistent with the 0.4% annual decrease observed since 2019. In the global ranking for 2023, Japan secured the 25th position, with Benin slightly ahead at 46,000 metric tons. Leading the list were China, Nigeria, and Indonesia, occupying the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively. In terms of consumption, Japan's spice intake is expected to decrease to around 140,000 metric tons by 2028 from 145,000 metric tons in 2023, reflecting a 0.6% average annual decline. This continues the 0.4% yearly drop in demand observed since 2019. Japan ranked 13th in spice consumption in 2023, with Mexico surpassing it at 145,000 metric tons. Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Thailand were ranked second, third, and fourth, respectively, in terms of spice consumption.
