In 2023, Bulgaria's spice production fell to 7,000 metric tons, marking a 12.5% decrease from the 8,000 metric tons recorded in 2022. The country's spice supply has been declining steadily, with an annual decrease of 2.6% since 2019. This performance positioned Bulgaria at 46th place globally in 2023, just behind Sierra Leone, which also produced 7,000 metric tons. Leading the global rankings were China, Nigeria, and Indonesia, which took the second, third, and fourth spots, respectively. Looking ahead, Bulgarian spice consumption is projected to decrease significantly. By 2028, it is expected to drop to 4,000 metric tons from the current 6,000 metric tons in 2023, translating to an annual decline of 7.8%. Despite this downward trend, Bulgarian demand had shown some positive growth of 3.7% year on year since 2019. In 2023, Bulgaria was ranked 63rd in terms of spice consumption, with Madagascar consuming 6,000 metric tons and securing a higher rank. Bangladesh, Indonesia, and Thailand were the top consumers, occupying the second, third, and fourth positions, respectively.
