Coconut imports to Bangladesh are set to rise over the next five years. The country is projected to import 29,000 metric tons in 2026, a 1.4% increase from the 2021 level of 27,000 metric tons. The demand for imports has been increasing steadily since 2017, at an average rate of 1.3% year-on-year. Meanwhile, Bangladeshi production of coconuts is also on the rise. The country is expected to produce 516,040 metric tons in 2026, a 1.8% increase from the 2021 level of 463,340 metric tons. Production has been steadily increasing since 1966, at an average rate of 4.4% year-on-year. In 2021, Bangladesh ranked 12th in the world for coconut production, with Malaysia overtaking it to become the leading producer with 463,340 metric tons. India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka ranked 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively.
