Tobagonians consumed around 2,000 metric tons of bananas in 2021, a 5.3% increase from the previous year’s 1.9 thousand metric tons. Demand for the fruit has been declining since 2017, dropping 12.6% year on year. The Maldives topped the ranking with 2,000 metric tons of consumption, followed by China, Indonesia and Brazil. Tobagonian banana production is set to decrease by 10% in the next five years, reaching around 1,050 metric tons in 2026. Since 1966, production has fallen 8.2% year on year. In 2021, the country ranked 97th on the list, with Seychelles leading the way at 1,910 metric tons. China, Indonesia and Brazil held the second, third, and fourth positions in this ranking.
