Bananas are set to remain one of the most consumed fruits in the world. According to a recent study, global consumption of bananas is estimated to reach 90 million metric tons by 2026. This figure represents a 0.3% year-on-year increase since 2017. India is currently the world’s largest consumer of bananas, with 24.6 million metric tons consumed in 2021. China, Indonesia and Brazil followed in second, third and fourth place respectively. Honduras experienced the most significant growth, with a 12.2% year-on-year increase, while Algeria witnessed a 22.1% decrease. Global banana production is also on the rise, estimated to reach 127 million metric tons by 2026. This is a 1% year-on-year compound annual growth rate since 1966. India is the world’s largest producer of bananas, with 31.8 million metric tons in 2021. China, Indonesia and Brazil followed in second, third and fourth place. Greece saw the most significant growth, with a 15% year-on-year increase, while Palestine experienced a 32.6% decrease.
