South Africans are set to consume a total of 573,660 metric tons of bananas by 2026. This is a 1.3% increase from 2021, when South Africa ranked 29th in the world for banana consumption at 530,000 metric tons. Thailand was the top consumer in 2021 at 530,000 metric tons. China, Indonesia, and Brazil respectively followed in second, third and fourth place. South African production of bananas is estimated to reach 435,390 metric tons by 2026, up 0.7% from 2021. Since 1966, the country's annual banana supply has increased by 6.1%. South Africa was ranked 31st in 2021, with Malawi ahead at 416,620 metric tons. China, Indonesia, and Brazil were again numbers 2, 3 and 4 in this ranking.
