New Zealanders are consuming more bananas than ever before. By 2026, it is estimated that 90 thousand metric tons of the fruit will be eaten annually – a 2.1% year-on-year increase from 78 thousand metric tons in 2021. Since 2017, demand for bananas has grown by 3.2% year-on-year. In 2021, New Zealand came in at number 76 in the global ranking for banana consumption, just behind Norway's 78 thousand metric tons. China, Indonesia and Brazil were respectively ranked second, third and fourth.
